Celtic Christmas is Friday, Dec. 7

Kick off the holidays with Celtic Christmas, a musical celebration of the season featuring traditional music from Ireland and Scotland.

The evening will start with a traditional Irish session – a set of fast-paced jigs and reels. Following a brief intermission, the performers will present the Christmas story in traditional and seasonal music and dance.

To cap the evening, the audience will be invited to join in singing some favorite carols.

Featured performers include the Barley House Band, flutist Frank Claudy, Jon Cooper on the uilleann pipes and whistle, Kirk Witherspoon on the bagpipes, Linda Shoesmith on the hammered dulcimer with Reg Shoesmith on guitar, dancer Katie Davis plus other special guests.

River City Radio Hour: November show

The River City Radio Hour will tape its third broadcast 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at The Moline Club, 513 16th St., Moline.

The show features Quad-Cities’ talent with an emphasis on folk and other roots music played in communities along the Mississippi River.

Scott Tunnicliff, a veteran of local theater, hosts the program. The Barley House Band, a local Celtic group, is the house band.

Guests for the program include Irish traditional flutist Frank Claudy; just-back-from Nashville singer-songwriter Andy Landers; vocalist Lionel Marcuse with some classic seasonal tunes; the Music Guild’s Gary Clark; poet Dale Haake; Brian Nelson with some Gilbert & Sullivan; the musical humor of Steven Couch; the River City Radio Mystery Players, and more.

The program pilot series is being released for download as podcasts from Apple iTunes and from the Barley House Band Website, www.barleyhouseband.com.

The River City Radio Hour is produced in conjunction with the Institute for Cultural and Healing Traditions, Ltd.’s Independent Scholar’s Evenings. The Q-C Leader is the media sponsor.

The three programs will be recorded at The Moline Club. Tickets are $5 for the show, or $25 for dinner at the show. Dinner seating is at 6:30 p.m. Doors open for the show at 7. Seating is limited.
